Ariel Kalil is Assistant Professor in the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. She received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Michigan. Ariel Kalil is Assistant Professor in the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. She received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Michigan. Kalil has conducted research on the effects of welfare and the transition from welfare to work on mothers and children; the influence of single parenthood, cohabitation, and non-resident father involvement on family processes and child development; and the transition to adulthood for teenage mothers. With funding from a William T. Grant Faculty Scholars Award, she is currently conducting a multi-method, interdisciplinary research project focused on the impact of parental job loss on family processes and child development. Kalil is the 2003 recipient of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) Award for Early Research Contributions. Thomas DeLeire is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1990 and received his Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University in 1997. From 2002 to 2003 he was Senior Economist for labor, health, and education at President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers and was Assistant Professor in the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago from 1997 to 2002.
