Born in 1908 in Auckland, A.W. Reed joined his uncle A.H. Reed's religious supply business in Dunedin in 1925, and established its general book publishing business in Wellington in 1932. Until his retirement in 1971, he helped build A.H. & A.W. Reed into New Zealand's leading publishing house.
