Two Libraries Win Alibris Collection Awards

Leading online bookseller supports libraries with $3000 annual grants

Alibris enables an Ohio hospital and an Arkansas public library to offer more books to their patrons

EMERYVILLE, CA—January 17, 2005—Alibris has named the Jack H. Rubinstein Library of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Ohio and the Baxter County Library in Arkansas the 2005 winners of the Alibris Collection Award. This is the second consecutive year that Alibris, a leading online bookseller, has provided $3,000 in books to under-funded libraries nationwide. Every year, more libraries look to Alibris to help expand their collections in specific areas of interest.

The award was presented Sunday, January 16, 2005, during the American Library Association's Midwinter Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Rubinstein Library of the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center intends to enhance its collection of "special needs" books for children, parents, and doctors at the medical center's Division of Developmental Disabilities.

"I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to you and your members for your very generous award to our library," said Librarian Barbara Johnson. "Our collection is a valuable resource for many at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and in our community, and it will continue to grow and reach many with the help of your award."

Arkansas' Baxter County Library plans to create a special collection and traveling exhibit about the two internment camps in Arkansas for Japanese-Americans during World War II, and help raise public awareness about this chapter in American history.

"Alibris' grant makes it possible for us to have additional resources available for those who want to learn more about the subject," said Library Director Gwen Khayat. "Students studying civil rights find it especially interesting to learn about events in the state where they live. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to better serve our community."

The two recipients were chosen from 100 applicants, nearly double the total of candidates from the previous year.

"Each winning library impacts readers' lives directly with the Alibris Collection Award," said Shelly Stuard, Director of Alibris for Libraries. "There were many other deserving libraries, but we are always pleased when our books and Web site can make both librarians and readers happy. Congratulations to the winners, and we look forward to fulfilling more libraries' wishes in the year to come."

Jurors included Lynn Cline, Head of Collection Development and Acquisitions, Southwest Missouri State University (2004 Alibris Collection Award winner); Mark Sandler, Chief Collection Development Officer, University of Michigan; Lynn Sutton, Library Director, Wake Forest University; Jack Walsdorf, retired bookseller and book scholar; and Dr. Richard Weatherford, Chairman and Co-Founder of Alibris.

Complete details of the awards may be found at the Alibris for Libraries Web site.
