The material is not new, but the book presents it in an absolutely en-lightening (no pun intended) manner. The theory of empowerment has been around for a while, but this book does a great job at characterizing managers who SAP the energy from their people, rather than ZAPPing them through empowerment. It makes it easy to identify these two types of opposing managers through an imaginative presentation of the material. I've been in management for over 30 years, and I think this book should be used as a checklist for evaluating managers. I personally have lived through the SAPPING style and seen 3 people quit in the last three years due to a manager who embodies the SAP management style. - I think the book used him as a model for poor management style. I have also seen people change from underachievers to promotable in less than a year when moved from this SAP to a ZAP manager. Again, the book does a great job of presenting the material in a fun, easy to read manner, rather than running on with mundane theory. It provides clear methods and examples in a creative manner to help readers become more effective managers by zapping their people with energy through empowerment. I purchased three more of these books for some of my peers and subordinates who I think can use the principles. I think the investment is worth it - the lightning is contagious.
