Zabriskie Point, director Michelangelo Antonioni's only American film, is an unusual, visually stunning examination of youthful rebellion against the Establishment. The film, initially presented in quasi-documentary style, presents a group of college activists discussing key issues of their political agenda. Mark (Mark Frechette) steals an airplane and flies over a desert where he meets Daria (Daria Halprin). She is the pot-smoking secretary to businessman Lee Allen (Rod Taylor), while he is a rebel searching for a worthy cause. In the midst of the arid surroundings, Mark and Daria fall in love. Antonioni's nonrealistic approach to American counterculture myths, his loose and sluggish narrative, and the dialogue (credited to Fred Gardner, Sam Shepard, Tonino Guerra, Clare Peploe, and Antonioni) caused Zabriskie Point to be poorly received when it was first released. The score features songs from Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Kaleidoscope, The Rolling Stones, John Fahey, The Youngbloods and Patti Page. Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

TITLE: Antonioni's "Zabriski Point"
GENRE: Hippy Protest
CAST: Daria Halprin, Mark Frechette, Rod Taylor, Death Valley's Furnace Creek (Zabriski Point Overlook), Saguaro Desert of Arizona
PLOT: Black panthers get help from white college students to stage a protest which escalates until shooting breaks out and a policeman is killed. Everyone knows the man won't stand for that and they all head for the hills. Our protagonist steals a small plane and runs out of gas in Death Valley where the heroine offers transportation help. They 'encounter'. He goes back to face having stolen the plane and she continues a business trip. Until they meet again.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 5.5 of 10; The music fails to impress. The advertisement of such great sound artists in the project would lead one to believe the audio was in good hands. This evidently was recorded by a high school AV geek. There was no expense for costumes as the same clothes are worn throughout. (Except for richman Taylor's character) There is more bad sides to his cinema effort. But I'd like to say one thing stands out : the landscape shots. What beautiful places Death Valley and Western Arizona are! (Any Indicator of movie ingenuity? Daria's name in the film is Daria!)
DVD BONUS: None to speak of (If you want music well done from this era, go see Tommy!) The promise from this piece was huge. Carlo (Mr Sophia Loren) Ponti produced, Sam Shepard was one of the writers (a shame the dialogue is lost by that HS AV geek). Another perplexion is in a love scene where the two leads are the only ones for hundreds of miles around and all of a sudden there's a love orgy going on. But that is countered with a finale explosion avant garde cinematic sequence that makes the movie rewarding at least a little.
