Despite Jim Eanes' identification with bluegrass, much of his music sounds like straight country performed on bluegrass instruments. As late as the early '60s, he was bucking trends by recording with acoustic instruments (including a banjo) but no drums and making constant use of the percussive "chop" rhythm. Eanes' midrange voice had none of the "high lonesome" character associated with bluegrass, and his willingness to experiment resulted in tracks like "Louise," a studio demo that Eanes wrote as a rock & roll song. That demo and 34 other studio recordings are included on this two-disc collection of Eanes' complete Starday sessions, considered by many fans to be Eanes' finest work. "Celebration," with its echoey shout-along chorus, hints at rockabilly and "Christmas Doll" is a novelty-flavored holiday number, but many other songs are more traditional. "Your Old Standby" is Eanes' most famous composition, having been recorded by George Jones more than once. Bluegrass purists may be left scratching their heads at times, but Allen Shelton's innovative banjo picking and Eanes' distinctive blend of bluegrass and country make for a unique listening experience. ~ Greg Adams, Rovi
