Intense!
Whoa! This was one intense ride!
From the first few pages Laurel captured my attention. She's so unique compared to the average heroine. I loved the little "parlor tricks" she did for her boss and was a bit disappointed that we didn't see more of that ability come into play as the story continued. That's not to say the story was lacking, just hoping that we see this talent shine in the future. Even after finishing this, I know that thoughts of Laurel will be running through my mind for a long while.
This is predominantly written from the heroine's point of view. However, we did get Huck's insights a few times. I'm curious to see exactly what all he's been through. Despite Laurel being trained to protect herself, Huck tends to take steps to protect her. And well, considering what all she goes through, perhaps he has every reason to do so. I'm hoping we get much more of him.
There is a constant ebb and flow of danger and suspense interlaced with the dark, heavy weight of secondary characters that kept me turning pages. I never knew which way to look. Where was the threat coming from and who was behind it? This was totally mind boggling. Along the way was the slow burn between Huck and Laurel making me antsy for more of them as I needed them to get to a safe place so they could have more. I literally read this book feeling as if I were sitting on pins and needles the whole time.
While this does end without a huge cliffhanger, it leaves us with unanswered questions as well as unresolved issues regarding certain characters. I can't wait to see what this author has planned in future books.
