Immediately following the 1999 Atlanta Jazz Party, AJP host Phil Carroll brought soprano saxophonist Bob Wilber and clarinetist Kenny Davern (formerly co-leaders of Soprano Summit) into the studio where they rekindled their magic as Summit Reunion once again in a marathon session that stretched into the wee hours playing hits sung by Al Jolson. "Baby Face" opens the CD and though it seems like it would be too dated a vehicle to work, Wilber's swinging arrangement quells any doubts immediately. Fine solos by guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and pianist Mark Shane complement the leader's work as well. Both Davern and Wilber play clarinet on "Carolina in the Morning" and the infrequently heard "When the Red, Red Robin, Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along." The rock-solid rhythm section includes veterans Frank Tate on bass and Hal Smith on drums. This is a very surprising date that should open the ears of many to some long and unjustly forgotten works, played with a fire that only Summit Reunion can deliver. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
