Parker for first calling attention to other tones, besides the above eight, which occur in Canton Colloquial. First, there are three even tones instead of two, the upper most one being a sort of cry. A typical case is (maau, a cat, the name being an imitation of its cry. These uppermost even tones are distinguished in this Edition of the Cantonese Dictionary by a tonal mark on the lower left corner of the syllable in addition to its being printed in Italics.
