I was vexed with my mother for not coming out to see the kind people, and ashamed to hear my father say what was not true. When we returned to the house, I spoke of this to my mother before them all, whereupon she reproved my father with some heat for not telling the truth. He was vexed, and said: "I was ashamed to say that you were unwflling to be their mistress and unwilling to see them. What have they done to offend you? " There was another thing which I thought odd and disagreeable: while my father was being inducted into his estate, and while the peasants were shouting their congratulations and good wishes--" Health and long life to you, our father Alexydi Stepan-itch! "--just then, my grandmother and aunt, who were looking out of the open window, fell into one another's arms with tears and loud cries of sorrow. " What were grandmother and aunt crying about?
