Seller's Description:
G (Ex-art library, with label on spine, i.d. marks on book block edges; leather spine is substantially worn and significantly older looking than from 1970. Dark green cloth boards with old leather spine, gilt letters on spine, various paginations, BW illus., several fold-outs. Text is in old script German. A reprint of this remarkable early history of Virginia, first published in 1590 in Frankfurt, in German, Latin, French, and English editions. Based on Thomas Hariot's text, John White's illustrations, and the engravings of Theodor De Bry. Hariot and White had accompanied Sir Walter Raleigh on one of his early expeditions to what is present-day Virginia. You can practice reading German script here. The illustrations and fold-outs are crisp and clear, although they are not hand-tinited like some originals were. This reprint copy looks much older than 1970, but it sure doesn't have the price tag of one of the originals, which at last glance tallied at least $400, 000.
