What a fantastic book, designed to introduce non-New Yorkers to the historical and current pulse and vitality of the great city, and guaranteed to trigger nostalgia in those of us who are natives of the city but have left it to live elsewhere.
The collection includes writing by Thoreau, Poe, Mary McCarthy, Vivian Gornick, Colson Whitehead, and many many more truly accomplished writers. I particularly enjoyed the pieces by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jacob Riis, Langston Hughes, and James Baldwin. But I haven't nearly finished the book yet. The literary quality of the essays and stories is so superb that I'm deliberately reading slowly. Very, very slowly.
