This book is GREAT for the advanced English language learner who really wants to make themselves sound as intelligent as they actually are, in written English.
Even if your English is "really good", just about any writing mistake makes your writing look a little ignorant, or unprofessional.
It is easy for someone to use this book at home. Each chapter describes the topic, then gives 7 sentences to see if you can identify the mistake. Check the key to see if you caught them - they are tricky. Then go through a page or two for each type of mistake. The examples and explanations are REALLY GOOD. There are useful and interesting exercises too.
Our high school exchange student, who was terrific at spoken English, and writing informally, had a lot of problems with written school papers - phrases misplaced, just a tangle. You could see there were ideas there, but, exactly what were they?
His mistakes were subtle and way beyond vocabulary or basic grammar points. Before I found this book, it was very hard and time-consuming for me to explain just why each sentence had to be clarified in a different way in order to be understood. It took a long (frustrating) time to revise so that his good ideas could shine.
This is the only book I saw that could take him to the "next level". It is super.
I am even studying it for myself!
(I think the newer editions have audio. I have the old one with the leaves on the front)
