Tadashi Tajima proves to be one of today's most talented shakuhachi players with this CD. A former student of the great master Katsuya Yokoyama, he has proven to be a very versatile shakuhachi player. He is a member of the Nihon No Oto Ensemble, a well-known and well-respected Japanese traditional chamber music ensemble. One of Tajima's landmarks as a shakuhachi player is that he plays his honkyoku solo in caves and large Buddhist temples. He is known for experimenting with the sound of the instrument as well as respecting a strong spiritual tradition in its playing. He as well performed with other non-Japanese instruments, such as the Western guitar or the Chinese zheng. In this CD of typical honkyoku solo pieces, of the Zen Buddhist repertoire, he offers us few of the most known and recorded pieces: "Hon Shirabe," "Shika No Tône," "Tsuru No Sugomori," and "Kokû," with some other pieces, performed on shakuhachis of different lengths. Tajima stands out from the crowd. Mesmerizing, and highly spiritual. ~ Bruno Deschênes, Rovi
