These tales are for folks who love Grimm etal, but want to move into other styles of writing. French fairy tales are NOT for children; they contain risqué remarks, people caught in compromising positions, and - gasp! - sexual innuendos! Having given fair warning, I will also say they are quite hilarious at times, and if you want your fairy tales to have detail (what did they serve at the banquet? what did she wear?) including "story within a story" (see White Cat especially), these are for you. I studied fairy tales at university, and can tell you that the original writers (Madame d'Aulnoy etc.) are highly regarded, though not very well known by the average reader. I plan to read these again and again! Enjoy!

Nice Translation
These stories hold up very well with translation. Exceptionally well written also. I breezed through this book and found it accurate in the art of story telling. However, it was even more grim in parts than the Brothers Grimm, for it is also violent and sexual in some areas. I would classify it more as "adult" fairytales, and although it is a nice volume, it just isn't my cup of tea. Enchanting perhaps, but very adult too. Perhaps, just perhaps, I like happy endings when it comes to fairytales....
