I?d previously read Bainton?s biographies of Martin Luther and Erasmus, and his ?Women of the Reformation in Germany and Italy? and ?Women of the Reformation in France and England?, and thought them all fantastic. Bainton wrote in a wonderful style, which is authoritative and scholarly, and at the same time highly readable.
I wasn?t quite as blown away by this one as I was by the other two in the series, perhaps because the women studied in it weren?t ones I was familiar with, but it was still interesting to read about some of these little-known but highly influential women of the sixteenth century. I read it in a day, and if Bainton had written a fourth volume, I?d happily buy that too.
