From the box in which I was tied I could hear men and dogs hurrying by. There was much yelling and laughing in the streets, while from every quarter of the town there came a chorus of yelps, whines, and barks. Nor was our team any exception. For I had no more than opened my eyes and stretched when Sport and Duke began barking. At this the malamoots set up their howl, in which I also took a part. "Are you fellers all crazy? There's not one of ye knows what he's a-barkin' er a-howlin' about," said Eli, as he walked among the dogs unfastening their chains. "If ye'll all jist foller me we'll soon see what's got into this camp an' what all this fuss is about." And, holding my chain in his hand, the dogs all running in front, we joined the noisy throng. The beach was crowded with men and dogs. Squeezing through to the front, Eli pointed out over the water, yelling and waving his cap as wildly as any of them. I looked the way he pointed, but could see nothing but those white waves which rolled and dashed against the shore. "Stand up, Wolf. See her comin' in?" And Eli motioned for me to stand up on my hind feet, a trick he had taught me when a pup. Instantly I obeyed, and, resting my paws on Eli's arm, looked again out over the sea.
