The words of the author, a young artillery officer, draw the reader into the heart of the intimate group that constituted the gun battery. The story of him, his brother officers and their men embraces the battles of Loos, the Ypres Salient, Messines, Third Ypres, Cambrai, Arras and finally the breakthrough of the allied armies at the Hindenburg Line which heralded the end of the war in 1918. In the second book we learn about the largely unreported contribution the British made towards the Italian war effort.
