English summary: In scholastic theory sacraments are signs and can therefore be subjected to semiotic theories that may however come into conflict with traditional notions of the nature and effect of the sacraments. Based on the annotation of Peter Lombard's Sententiae , Ueli Zahnd examines this tussle between the statements made by theological authorities and philosophical insights provided by logic, physics and metaphysics in the late Middle Ages. A particular focus is placed on writers of the 15th and early 16th century who have barely been researched up to now, and whose multifaceted approach to the question of the sacraments and the interaction of philosophy and theology enables us to map a little-known scholastic period, which has even provided an opportunity to question common patterns of interpretation, such as that concerning the division between nominalists and realists.
