William Callow. Fine in Near Fine jacket. The first edition of this illustrated work on the English watercolourist William Callow, held in the original pictorial dustwrapper. The first edition of this work, in the original unclipped pictorial dustwrapper. Dustwrapper shows 'Lincoln Cathedral from the High Street'. An interesting look at William Callow, a landscape painter who was active in the nineteenth century. He studied under the artists Copley Fielding and Thales Fielding, leaning watercolour techniques, before finding work as an engraver. He exhibited work in Paris, and eventually his work gained rapid popularity in England. He became a member of the Old Water-Colour Society, as well as keeping travel dairies. Written by Jan Reynolds, a specialist in watercolours. She established her reputation as a art writer with her publication 'The Williams Family of Painters'. Illustrated with four coloured plates, and numerous monochrome plates. Collated, complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding with the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Very little wear to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Dustwrapper with one small closed tear to the head of the rear wrap, with some very light marking to the rear wrap. Evidence of label being formerly adhered to the tail of the front flyleaf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Fine.
