James Stevenson's books about Mary Ann and Louie and their Grandpa, who always has a story to make them feel better about their predicament, are hilarious. They always involve Grandpa and his little brother Wainey (Wainright). The stories start simply, relating to the grandchildren's problem-of-the-day, and before the stories are over there will be giant armadillos or sea monsters, or pirates. In this book the boys had been asked to feed a cat while the neighbors were away. Instead they found not one, or even two, but more than they could count. When the stories are over, Uncle Wainey joins them on the porch for strawberry ice cream. I have read Stevenson's books to grandchildren for many years. They laugh out loud, and immediately ask to have the book read again. That is the best measure of a good children's book. Stevenson's books are difficult to find, but take advantage if you have the opportunity.
