A tight and nice first edition of this (to quote the book's lengthy subtitle) "illustrated almanac of CURIOUS doings. dealing with wasps. spiders. snakes. toads. birds. ants. squirrels and other kinds of small WILDLIFE that can be found working at complicated trades within sight of my DOORSTEP. with a few words, also, concerning oldtime MAGIC. snake doctors and cowkillers etc., etc." Choice autograph addition: On an inner flyleaf, the author/illustrator sketches in blue fineline a snake charmer seated in profile, bent over to face a coiled snake while a bird on a twig gazes; above he inscribes it "For / Adlai IV" and below signs and dates it "S. Pines / 1965." Rounds (1906-2002) was an author and illustrator whose many popular books often feature tall tales and natural history stories set in Montana and North Carolina. Businessman and former journalist Adlai E. Stevenson IV is son of the former U.S. senator (Adlai III), who is son of the governor/presidential candidate (Adlai II), who is grandson of the U.S. vice president (Adlai I).
