America's National Wildlife Refuges
"Wild Lands for Wildlife" explores the National Wildlife Refuges in the United States. Numerous photographs capture close-ups of refuge animals and their scenic domains. The book explores the refuges using a geographic approach as evidenced by the chapter titles: A Scattering of Arks, Coasts and Islands, The Eastern Woodlands, The Prairies, The Interior West, and Alaska: A Land Apart. There are currently 548 refuges in the US today and at least one in each of the 50 states. The smallest refuge, Mille Lacs in Minnesota, covers six-tenths of an acre; the biggest refuge, Yukon Delta in Alaska, covers 19 million acres. Our refuge system began in 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt opened Pelican Island in Florida. Includes a map of refuges as of 1984. Though a bit dated, this is still a good book for wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists.
