This work describes the contest between British imperialists and Indian nationalists at the point when India sought to achieve its independence, and when the definition, acquisition and ownership of India was most at stake. The author emphasizes the selected nature of the facts provided by historical texts, and demonstrates the historicity of fiction. She calls into question assumptions about the end of nationalism implicit in histories and fiction, which usually describe a battleground on which only ruling-class Indians and British meet. Texts by women, "untouchables" and other repressed groups are examined in this study, alongside the work of such well-known figures as Kipling, Nehru, Forster and Gandhi. The account which emerges is a complicated, multi-vocal and even contradictory one.
