This book gives not only the farmer (and his love for his hat) a direct glimpse of his personality, but every character (animals, birds, etc.) their own personality and way of looking at things. You can almost hear their own way of talking, saying things. The biggest idea was that the farmer bought a new hat instead of taking it back from the little bird that was using it as a nest. I can't imagine any child, or adult, not being totally absorbed by this wonderful book.
