Roy Fox was born and raised in the U.S. but is best remembered by the British for the excellent jazz and dance music his orchestra performed in and around London during the '30s. Living Era's Roy Fox tribute album presents an overview of Fox's musical legacy, drawing upon the Decca and HMV recordings he made between 1931 and 1938. More so than many of his English contemporaries, Fox maintained a healthy equilibrium between relaxing mood music, polite pop and authentically jazzy swing. His singers -- ranging from frowsy Nat Gonella to delicate Denny Dennis, an erstwhile electrician from Derby -- handled a healthy spectrum of material. "I Got Rhythm" is wonderfully hot and campy, although immediately following the vocal, in an apparent play on Fox's reputation as "The Whispering Cornetist," the recording volume is artificially lowered and then gradually increased during his solo. Such surreptitious technological tampering is rarely encountered in records of this vintage. Other fun moments occur during "Oh! Mo'Nah!" (a novelty song still associated with both Ted Weems and Bill Boyd's Cowboy Ramblers); the rambunctious "How'm I Doin'?" and the pleasantly silly "Rhythm Lullaby." Roy Fox also had the good sense to cover Duke Ellington's beautiful opus, "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart." He used real jazz players and periodically enriched his dance band's repertoire with solid and substantial selections. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
