Long before Scream made us terrified of answering the phone for fear of playing games with a psycho killer with a frightening knack for horror movie trivia, When a Stranger Calls was not the only movie to scare audiences out of their wits during the late 70s, early 80s. While this movie became a huge hit in 1979, a much earlier nightmare that used the movie that used same chilling approach and made phones something to dread was Black Christmas from 1972, which also became a big hit. Still, judging by these movies, it is easy to see where Kevin Williams might have gotten his influence when he wrote the screenplay that ultimately became Scream in 1996, especially considering that Black Christmas and When a Stranger Calls are BOTH pretty scary movies. When Jill Johnson receives frightening phone calls while babysitting, she soon phones the police. When they later trace the calls, it leads to the horrifying discovery, for Jill, that the caller is inside the house! The terrified teenager barely escapes with her life, but it is, unfortunately, too late to save the children.
