This is the second time I have purchased this magnificent historical survey of Welsh history. The first was as a student of Gwyn's in Aberystwyth and now for a revisionary exercise.
First time round it thrilled with its style and elegance of expression. Second time round it reinforced itself as a first class piece of scholarship dealing with Middle Ages history bringing alive the worlds of Caradoc the discoverer of America and Owain Glyndwr that long lost last prince of the Cymru.
It still passionately reinforces a tremendous sense of Welshness and brings home to an alien resident the magic and the beauty of Wales and the Welsh.
Not that we didn't have our moments of depression and heartbreak; either through the enclosures, the Rebecca Movement against tolls, or the attempts to counter the brutality and senseless destruction of Thatcher. One thinks of what remains after the decimation of syndicalism, of vital raw industry and social cohesion. God help us if we were to fight another war against a real enemy and not a poor third world, minority group, Muslim country.
Wales was and Wales is: and thanks to Gwyn Williams's erudition, scholarship and completely authentic voice we have here a passionate reminder of what it is to be - still - Welsh.
