This forms part of Day One?s ?Ministry Mission? series, a range of titles addressing practical matters relating to Christian ministry and world mission. While other books in the series have covered topics such as spiritual leadership, the theology of missions, understanding Islam and personal discipleship, this is a guide for those nominated to a group to identify a suitable pastor for their church.
I have never ever read a book like this, whose purpose is so clear and evident and whose guidance is so immersed in Scripture at every point. The product is a significant and valuable contribution to assist the process of finding the right man for the pulpit.
The starting point is naturally the current practice of having a committee with an unclear understanding of biblical guidelines for choosing a pastor, incorrect expectations, erroneous criteria and a weighted evaluation process that identifies the wrong person. Essentially, the author divides his analysis of choosing the right pastor into six areas ? the candidate?s preaching, pastoring, qualifications, theology, his practice and how to find the right man.
With the addition of an example Doctrinal Statement, example questions for a committee to ask a prospective pastor and a checklist for clarity in a call to a minister, this is an excellent resource.
Books of this kind seem un-necessary because different churches have different needs or demands of their pastors. The truth remains though, that Churches who seek pastors that study the Bible diligently and expound it clearly as their main priority, may need this book to clarify for themselves the areas they need to consider and the questions they need to ask.
I would recommend this highly.
