Papa is an adorable two-year-old who lives with his single mother. Papa loves to play and have fun and is very inquisitive. Thus, at every chance he gets, he goes around asking everyone what they are doing. His questions spring forth from his curious mind as he loves to understand everything he sees. In the first part of the book, when Papa pays a visit to his sweet grandma, she takes him to her garden at the back of her house. When they get there, grandma bends down to start planting the seeds, and Papa asks her what she is doing. She then explains to Papa how the fruits and vegetables he eats come about. Grandma then asks him to join her, and Papa joins her excitedly. Grandma is very fond of Papa. Thus, she answers all of his questions about seeds, fruits, vegetables, and gardening. This helps Papa a lot as he learns the names and shapes of the different kinds of seeds they plant together. When his mom comes to get him, Papa tells her about all the planting he did with grandma, and she listens carefully. Papa goes to grandma's every weekend to see how the plants are doing and is thrilled to see they are doing well. Then, one Saturday, grandma tells him that all the fruits and vegetables are ripe and ready for picking. Thus, they both gather them together. When Papa becomes hungry, Grandma makes him a tasty meal which Papa enjoys. Exhausted from the day's work, Papa falls asleep on the couch while waiting for his mom to come to pick him up. When his mom arrives, Papa proudly shows her all the fruits and vegetables they plucked, and she praises him for doing such a good job. Grandma gives Papa some fruits and vegetables on the way home, and Papa feels so proud of himself.
