Excerpt: ...our strength spent for nought, --when life's burden and life's mystery press heaviest upon us, --then to believe that life no more than death, that "neither things present nor things to come, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus;" this is to have an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast, that shall not fail us in the most troubled sea! For troubles will come, and days of darkness, when we may almost fail to see the light, and yet feel it, know it to be beyond. Joy, even heavenly joy, is not a constant guest on earth: here we have no abiding peace. It cannot be so: not only because we are not yet perfected, but because earth is not heaven; this is not our rest. A precious foretaste is sometimes granted to us, an earnest in our hearts; but while sorrow, and suffering, and sin, and death, are around us, and within us, while "the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together as now,"--" we also must groan within ourselves, looking for the redemption of the body," waiting for "the glory to be revealed." This is our attitude upon earth; waiting, expectancy, --earnest expectation, not fruition. When our spirits are least bound by earth, when we realize most clearly the things unseen, when we are nearest to God and most filled with His Spirit, then have we a foretaste of the promised bliss, then have we joy and peace in believing. But when earth presses heavily upon us, and tbings present seem fain to overwhelm us, and the time of weakness is the time of conflict, and a horror of thick darkness comes upon us, --then to hold fast by God, to cleave to Him--just simply to believe aud hold fast--that may be in God's sight the truest evidence of faith, and should be...
