The author of this book is an award-winning writer/psychologist who works with schizophrenic and psychotic patients at a clinic in Boston. In this book she confronts the problems and strivings of six different patients, culminating with a turn inwards in which she becomes the subject of her own analysis (Slater herself suffered from psychologicial disorders as a teenager). Ultimately, Slater is less concerned with the brain's chemical eccentricities as such, as with the human dilemmas that stem from them. This is an account of both her patients' and her own struggle to accept and to overcome.

Lauren Slater's work is especially valuable for those who have no personal understanding of, or experience of, the world of mental disorders. She has worked with people of varying degrees of illness, those who were psychotic, those who were not, those who were despairing and in agony. It is - I believe - of vital importance that the world accepts that suffering exists in the mind, not solely in the body. Pain hurts. Of course there are differences, but while there are still many who wish to argue that diseases of the mind are purely self-induced it is important that they should be shown, and believe in, agony in thought as well as in other areas.
Slater writes very well indeed, and with that touch of the personal that makes characters spring to life on the page.
