Steve Lawrence jumps to his wife Eydie Gorme's label, ABC-Paramount Records, for their debut as a duo on LP, and it is a satisfying, if predictable, presentation. Someone, maybe one or both of the principals, has scoured the catalogs of some major songwriters for classic duets, which Lawrence and Gorme cover handily. They are particularly comfortable with the work of Frank Loesser, notably on "No Two People," from the film Hans Christian Andersen, on which two lovey-dovey lovers step on each other's lines to proclaim how infatuated they are. The singers have a natural musical affinity, with their clear voices and precise enunciation, but they don't actually put much heat or characterization into their performances. So, for example, "Baby, It's Cold Outside," which ought to have an erotic undercurrent, doesn't, and Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's "I Remember It Well" from Gigi, in which two old lovers remember things differently, lacks the affectionate bite it should display. Lawrence and Gorme certainly sound like a happy couple, and they sing well, but neither of them digs into the meanings of the lyrics very deeply. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
