Chief among the latter is alcohol, which the Professor himself first showed has the effect of paralysing them, even in small doses; so that, instead of promptly attacking and destroying the deleterious microbes, the alcoholised phagocytes remain stupefied and motionless--in fact, behaving as if dead drunk!--and thus is the body s natural army of defence against infective microbes--against disease and death--put hers de combat, by alcohol. Confirmation of this has been given by various facts and experiments. Nothing is easier than to protect rabbits from anthrax, by serum inoculation; but this fails oompletely if they are first dosed with alcohol. Again, in the Pasteur Institute, at Paris, it was found that in nearly every case in which the treatment failed to arrest hydrophobia the patient was an alcoholic. This discovery of the paralytic effect of alcohol upon the phagocytes, in the opinion of Dr. Saleeby, completes the scientific case against it. THE Orsoxrc POwER or THE BLOOD. But there is still another discovery, viz., that of Professor VVright, of St. Mary s Hospital, London, who has demonstrated what he has called the Opsonic power of the blood--by which is meant the presence in the blood serum of some substances"opsonins ------which act upon the disease bacteria in such a way as to make them more palatable and more digestible to the phagocytes, and thus increase the vital resistance of the blood to these bacteria.
