In his thirteenth collection, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic melds folklore and black magic with everyday life. Hamlet's ghost wandering the halls of a Vegas motel, a street corner ventriloquist using passersby as dummies, and Jesus panhandling in a weed-infested Eden are just a few of the startling conceits Simic unleashes in this collection. This book by the current Poet Laureate of the United States is a joy to read. Punctuated by unexpected images and sounds, I was also particularly taken with the prosy style of the poems and the quality of the sound of the words. If you want to try poetry (or try it again) but you think poetry has to rhyme and rhyme is too old fashioned or trite, try this book -- this is the modern poetry. As a poetry student, I am still marveling at Simic's use of plosives, frictives, nasals and liquids -- the consonants, not to mention the vowels. "My mother was a braid of black smoke..." Simply great!
