This is a beautifully crafted story which carries you along in fascination with all its knowledge of local geology, wild life, local tribal lore, the triumph of humans over adversity, introspection and self discovery, culminating in a profound and uplifting conclusion. A superb book.

Loved it!
For an upcoming trip, I wanted to familiarize myself with Alaska's wilderness and found this book at my library. It's beautifully written by someone who really knows Alaska's plants, animals, geology, history and people, and he fills his diary with his knowledge. I felt like I was right there with him, alone on a stormy shoreline in the middle of nowhere with just my thoughts for company. His thoughts turn philosophical during his journey, making this book much more than just a unique wilderness experience.
