There are walks in central Edinburgh as well as in the villages and suburbs. They vary from short strolls to more strenuous excursions, and are graded to take into account the distance and type of terrain covered, making it easy to judge which walks are suitable for your level of fitness and experience. Each walk is easily accessible by car or public transport and information is given on this. Round trip distances are given, and walks are illustrated by detailed maps showing the route clearly. There are accompanying step-by-step instructions. Each route is contained within one page or two facing pages, making it unnecessary to turn pages while walking. Features of note, interesting viewpoints and objects connected with history or legend are explained. The first, introductory part of the guide details the history and special characteristics of Edinburgh and the Pentlands as well as giving general advice on countryside walking.
