I first heard about this book through Bill Simmons, otherwise known as "The Sports Guy" on ESPN. He said it was the single best sports book he'd ever read, and that it was sadly out of print. This brought me to Alibris, where I found and purchased this book by William Goldman and Mike Lupica. Lupica is a top sportswriter in New York, and Goldman is the brilliant screenwriter (The Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, among others) who is also a devoted New York sports fan.
The book moves between Goldman ("A Fan's Notes") and Lupica ("The Reporters Notebook")'s views of the Mets, Yankees, Knicks, Nets and Giants (sorry, hockey fans) during the 1987 season. For those who remember, the Mets and Giants were both coming off of championship seasons.
Wait Till Next Year is simply phenomenal - totally engaging, funny and a classic example of sharp, acute writing skill. It doesn't matter if you like New York sports teams (I personally root against all of them), if you like good writing and sports in general, this book will be a winner for all who get a chance to read it.
