A monograph on Edouard Vuillard (1863-1940) based on his recently available private journals. This painter, in the author's view should be regarded as one of the greatest 20th-century painters. She regards his dual ability to paint everyday life with dramatic colour puts him into the same category as Chardin and Degas, whereas his faces, fashions and interiors have an enduring quality which associates him with Vermeer. Belinda Thomson has previously written "The Post-Impressionists".
