The Volvo F88, which appeared in 1965, signalled a revolution in truck operation. Gone were the days of noisy, cramped cabs, crash gearboxes, heavy manual steering and harsh suspension. The forward-control, tilt cab reduced the bumper to back of cab dimension as a response to legislation on overall truck dimensions. This was a truck in which drivers felt safe and comfortable, 'an icon of the trucking world in the 1970s,' as George Bennett describes it. The F88 changed very little over its production life, the most notable development being the G88 which appeared in 1970 and was particularly suitable for high-cube loads. 'Between 1965 and 1977,' writes Patrick Dyer, 'Volvo produced a staggering 40,000 examples of all types.' Towards the end of the 1960s many of Volvo's competitors - including Scania - were manufacturing heavy trucks with engine output soaring over the 300 bhp mark. Volvo's response, in 1970, was the F89 with its 330 bhp TD120 engine. This 'Power Package' also had a strengthened chassis and larger brakes enabling it to handle gross train weights of up to 100 tonnes. Together with its G89 derivatives and overseas specials, over 21,000 units of the F89 were produced, 'a highly impressive figure for a premium tractor.' Published by Gingerfold, this book was the first of Patrick Dyer's series on modern trucks. It is slightly smaller in format than the Scania and DAF titles but, like them, contains a wealth of photographs of trucks in service. The knowledgeable captions are full of interesting details.
