In 1924 Red McKenzie (a former jockey and bellhop) formed an unusual novelty trio, the Mound City Blue Blowers, consisting of him playing a comb (covered in tissue or wax paper), Dick Slevin on kazoo, and banjoist Jack Bland. Their first recording, "Arkansas Blues," was a major hit, which was a major surprise to everyone involved. The Mound City Blue Blowers recorded 20 numbers during 1924-1925 (some on a different label as McKenzie's Candy Kids), adding guitarist Eddie Lang to the group by the seventh song.
