Andreae spent more than 40 years as director of the Tonhalle Orchestra beginning in 1906 and during that period was also director of the Zurich Conservatory for nearly 30 years. Despite his importance in twentieth century Swiss musical history, a casual internet search on his name (in 2007) did not reveal much more about him or his music than what is in the liner notes accompanying this disc of his piano trios. However, it does reveal that a handful of musicians, like the Locrian Ensemble here, are rediscovering his chamber music. The first trio was Andreae's first publication, dating from 1899. It is unabashedly Romantic and firmly tonal, lush sounding, with gripping tension and passion. His easily appealing melodies and themes are meant to immediately win the listener over, and generally succeed at it....
