The closest parallel, for those in need of one, would be Karol Szymanowski. The music on this release is not particularly Bulgarian in flavor; the "exotic preludes" are exotic from the Bulgarian point of view, not simply that of the West, carrying hints of Spanish flamenco, Middle Eastern, and Russian traditions as well as Bulgarian elements. The Ten Impressions, Op. 9, are even more general, lying in the Rachmaninov realm. What the pieces here do share is a lush virtuosity, and Hyperion has chosen its Vladigerov representative well with Nadejda Vlaeva, a protegee of Lazar Berman, who has praised her to the skies.
