This release is the eighth in a series from the Naïve label exploring a large cache of rediscovered Vivaldi concertos. All have contained gems, and this is no exception; the new wrinkle here is that the album is the first to feature French musicians, violinist Julian Chauvin and the ensemble Le Concert de la Loge, taking its name from an 18th century ensemble. For that matter, the musicians play in the contemporary Italian style, with big, slashing attacks and high drama. The effect is intensified by the "Il teatro" theme, which refers not to the subtitle of an individual work, but to the idea that the music reflects the influence of opera. Emphasizing this influence is the hallmark of the Italian approach, and the concept works for most of the pieces here. There are chunky chordal ritornello themes and some very vocal violin lines in the slow movements, most of which are gorgeous. The exception to the pattern is the final concerto, the Violin Concerto in B flat major, RV 366 ("Il Carbonelli")....
