If all this sounds like plodding completism at its worst, rest assured that it isn't. For whatever reason, many of these works are extraordinary. They have usually been ascribed to Vivaldi's work at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, whose collection included one or more bassoons, but here, annotator Cesare Fertonani proposes instead that Vivaldi wrote them for skilled opera instrumentalists, perhaps Bohemian.
