Visage is one of those increasingly innumerable chill-out/downbeat compilations with a provocative cover presumably compensating for any lack of distinction from the music within. Still, this one does rise above the pack, with intriguing choices by compiler Félix Cutillo and a subtle blend of artists familiar to downbeat fans with solid productions from new names. The sounds and styles referenced certainly aren't distinctive; there's a heavy emphasis on Brazilian forms, paced by tracks from Mr. Hermano (courtesy of the world music obsessives at Mr. Bongo Records), the Vienna-based Freedom Satellite, the always breezy and laid-back Nicola Conte (his remix of a Greyboy original), and Buscemi (another remix, this a samba-heavy update of "Crystal Frontier" by Calexico). The last half of the mix begins to open it up, encompassing everything from intelligent downtempo (Kevin Yost) to a housey Isley Brothers cover ("It's a Disco Night" from Pascal and Mr. Day) to a Pépé Bradock closer in a reggae style. The mix isn't seamless, but since this is more a compilation than a mix album, it's easily forgiven. Visage is almost as interesting a mix for fans of Jazzanova as those of Sade. ~ John Bush, Rovi
