Ivanhoe's VIRGINTOOTH....an original vampire tale.
Tales of vampires have, pardon the pun, have been done to death. Original ideas concerning these blood sucking darlings are few and far between. 'Dracula', 'Interview With A Vampire', 'Live Girls' are just three that come to mind as original and groundbreaking. And it seems that every possible aspect of vampirism has been written about...that is until I read Ivanhoe's VIRGINTOOTH.
Ivanhoe ventures into realms where very few, if any, have had the nerve (or imagination) to go. A detailed account of the transformation from mortal to the Undead. Questions are answered such as; what would it be like to awaken in your own grave, finding yourself "alive" and breathing, and knowing that you are dead. And what does a vampire really do during it's first night of existence? Where do vampires really sleep? And what does the hunger really feel like?
VIRGINTOOTH is a story of a woman's conversion, if you will, from a mortal into a creature of the night. But the transformation isn't as cut and dry as depicted in the movies or conventional vampire novels. Like everything if life, and death, the ways of the Undead must be learnt through trial and error.
The opening two pages of this fantastic novel is some of the best, most original writing in the horror genre I have had the pleasure to read in many years. The scene of the buried Elizabeth is so claustrophobic and unnerving that I was riveted to my seat, white knuckling the novel.
Some of the characters Ivanhoe introduces us to are extraordinarily imaginative, colorful, and somewhat off-the-wall (and would be at home perfectly within a David Lynch film). Gregory is one of my favorite vampires. He hunts all night, then returns home to vomit gallons upon gallons of blood into his swimming pool, then takes a nose-dive into the crimson waters of life. We are introduced to countless other vampiric characters within this novel, each separate but equally strong individuals. Proving that the Undead are as diverse as we mortals.
Mark Ivanhoe's VIRGINTOOTH is sensual, well paced, well crafted, fascinating, revolting grotesque, enlightening, humorous, horrifying and original.
