There's a handful of oldies radio staples scattered throughout MCA Special Products' Vintage Collectibles, Vol. 4: 1955-1969 -- Hugh Masekela's "Grazing in the Grass," Patsy Cline's "Crazy," Three Dog Night's ubiquitous "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" -- but what makes it so interesting and enjoyable is the rest of the collection. Nothing else on Vol. 4 is conventional. Even when big-name artists are featured, such as the Mamas & the Papas, Bo Diddley and Buddy Holly, they aren't represented by their biggest hits (here, they're represented by "Glad to Be Unhappy," "Diddley Daddy" and "Rock Around with Ollie Vee," respectively). Also, the compilers serve up driving Chicago blues (Little Walter's "My Babe"), doo-wop (the Moonglows' "In My Diary"), country-pop (Dale Ward's "A Letter from Sherry") and Celtic folk-pop (the Irish Rovers' "The Unicorn"), none of which regularly appear on pop-rock oldies collections. Their very presence makes Vintage Collectibles, Vol. 4 a particularly interesting listen, even if it makes it a little inconsistent.
