This book has some profound and very interesting points to make about the nature of Christianity in England and makes a some valuable points that we sometimes try to avoid in contemporary life that being the nature, effects and after effects of persecution and conquest. In our western, so called civilized, human rights driven culture we often look into history with blinkered eyes because we are not used to the hardships of passed generations.
Here is a history of the days of monks, monasteries and the medieval world of English Christianity into which the Vikings invade. Intent on rape, plunder, pillage and the prospect of settlement evil and the persecution suffered by English monks was soon turned into a harvest by God. The gospel prevailed, salvation and the gospel came to the Norsemen who traveling back across the sea, took Christianity back across to Scandinavian lands where it flourished. The book details how many bishops and monks looked beyond their own personal discomfort, hardship and even their deaths and saw the hand of God at work on a national level throughout Europe.
If you're after a good swatch of history, drama, exploration and God working wonders through his people suffering in the face of adversity then this is a book well worth the read.
