With Buddy Rich on drums and vocals by Skip Nelson and Betty Brewer, songs like "In the Blue of Evening" and "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" are timeless classics. Charlie Barnet & Orchestra are next, from a performance in Massachusetts in 1945. Fran Warren appears on vocals on "Just a Little Fond Affection" and Artie Shaw & His Orchestra, featuring Roy Eldrige on trumpet, are featured next, including "Lucky Number," written by Ray Conniff. Les Brown & His Band of Renown are featured with their 1944 performance, including "It Could Happen to You" with Doris Day on vocals. Tenor saxophonist Ted Nash and trumpeter Randy Brooks also appear. The first disc ends with bonus tracks by Benny Goodman's six-piece band in a spirited December 5, 1941, performance in New York City.
